In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basics on how to begin designing a new bedroom layout. From the general theme you’re considering to important color considerations and more, there are a number of important factors to consider if you’re going this route.

Located in Millcreek, Guild Hall Furniture & Interior Design, we’re happy to offer a wide range of bedroom furniture to all our clients throughout SLC and other parts of Utah, plus the best interior design professionals in the area to assist you with any new room design you’re considering. What are some other basic tips we tend to offer clients for bedroom design? Here are a few.

Furniture Matching or Contrasting?

Once you’ve determined your primary room color scheme, which is where we left off in part one, the next major step is to ask yourself whether you want to have furniture that matches in color or that has a strong contrasts in color. This is often one of the biggest design dilemmas our professional designers face, but it’s important to consider all factors when making your choice.

If you choose matching bedroom furniture, you’ll tend to make the room appear more small and cozy, but if you go with contrasting furniture, the room will often appear larger and bolder. Another benefit of contrasting furniture is that if done properly it can provide for some fun, unique additions to the room’s design, making it stand out in a way you might not have originally envisioned.

Sleep Considerations

While design and aesthetics are very important factors for any bedroom, they can’t come at the expense of the room’s primary purpose: Sleep. From comfort items like mattress toppers or memory foam pillows to more standard bedroom furnishings, there are several options for sleep-related items that can help you get the most out of your slumber.

In addition, look for any design elements that may interfere with sleep. For instance, super-light curtains may seem stylish, but if they’re letting sun in through an east-facing window at 7am every morning, you’re not going to be very happy. Ensure that you have blackout shades or curtains if necessary, and don’t forget about lighting, either.

Consider Your Partner

If this room is being designed not only for you, but also for a significant other or partner, it’s always a good idea to talk about your plans for design and room layout with them, too. Just as you want the space you’re sharing designed specifically with your habits in mind, they do as well, so be sure to communicate with one another during this process. If they have strong feelings about certain areas of the bedroom being used for specific reasons (like maybe they like to keep a lot of clothes in the bedroom, while you prefer to keep them out), then make sure that works for both of you.
