Noting Corners
We left off in part one with measuring the actual rooms where you’ll be placing furniture. Once you have a good idea of the dimensions there, it’s important to also take stock of corners and other potential obstacles. If you’re looking at a smaller room, for example, you might want to avoid putting too many pieces in there as it could crowd the space.
Another option is to find home furniture that can help you make better use of corner space. This might include a corner bookshelf or something similar. The important thing is to think about how people will move around the room and what kinds of obstacles might be in their way.
Measuring the Furniture
Next up is another important part of the process – measuring the furniture itself. This is critical whether you’re buying new pieces or moving old ones around. You might assume that a couch will fit perfectly in a certain spot, only to find out later that it’s too big or too small once you get it in there.
The best way to avoid this problem is by measuring the furniture before you buy or move it. This means measuring not just the length and width but also the height. You might also want to measure doorways and other potential obstacles to make sure everything will fit through them.
Floor Plan
While we’re listing the floor plan last here, that doesn’t actually mean it has to be the final thing you do. In fact, you might want to create a floor plan early on as part of your measuring and furniture layout process. This can help you visualize how everything will fit together and give you a better idea of what kinds of obstacles you might need to account for.
Creating a floor plan is relatively simple. You can use graph paper to sketch out a basic outline of the room and then add in furniture as you go. Just be sure to use accurate measurements so you don’t run into any problems later on.
